It’s been an interesting day, to say the least.
Two celebrations happening on the same day - thanks to Mayor Ford (I think).
The Pride celebrations used to take place a week before this - but since the G20 (fiasco) when they moved the parade to a week later, it now coincides with Canada Day - a stupid move, as far as I’m concerned.
Unless, of course, they are trying to emulate the early Christians by overlaying a 'religious' holiday over that of a ‘pagan’ and therefore, ‘claiming’ it in some way.
Perhaps that is the hope of this crazy group of people - perhaps they think by moving Pride to the Canada Day Weekend, they can, perhaps fold the whole thing into one big celebration where Pride becomes just a cypher within the larger holiday.
Okay - even to me, that sounds really stupid.
But!
Nevertheless - it’s still weird that they now occur on the same weekend - it’s just too much. Let us move Pride back to the week before and be done with it!
On top of all that - I didn’t even go to the parade today - I stayed home and did laundry.
Imagine.
This great holiday day - and I’m doing laundry.
Well, I just didn’t feel very celebratory for some reason.
Of course, my partner wanted to go to the parade - and went.
But after so many years of being at home, working according to my own schedule, I have a certain layout, order, and structure to my weeks - and holidays are rarely included.
And I see this as the rest of my life.
The work I do on a daily basis will never end - until I die.
Oh yes, others may retire from their jobs, but my ‘job’ is one from which one never retires - so I'd better like it.
The laundry, the cooking, the shopping for groceries, the general maintenance of a household never ends - until the day you die - or are too decrepit to actually continue.
Oh, my!
Let’s step back - It’s been a good day; a beautiful day (if somewhat troubled…) - and I am thankful for all that.
Life is good (it could be so much worse).
And I am appreciative.
And I am Canadian (Happy Canada Day!).
And I am Gay (Happy Gay Pride!).
And I am American (Happy 4th of July!).
And I do my best to honour all of those things that make up who I am - in my own fashion.
I try not to disappoint - but sometimes it is inevitable and out of my control.
Still, as I say - I do my best to fulfil my obligations and hone as closely to my own truths as I am able.
This is my pledge of allegiance.
And that, in itself, is something worth celebrating.
Cheers!
