Last year, in March, my partner and I took a holiday to Italy. We’d been planning it for some time and at first, thought of going in February - but there were scheduling conflicts and we had to postpone until a later time. Our itinerary consisted of a few days in Venice, then Florence, and finally, Rome - but more about that another time.
Once everything was booked, we discovered that Carnevale would be occurring in Venice during our time there. This was not a bad thing - but it did explain why our accommodation had more than doubled in price; something we had not anticipated, but we figured that the additional glamour and excitement with which the streets would be filled would, in the end, make it all worthwhile. And it was - But that is neither here nor there.
The day of departure arrived and we boarded the plane - we were travelling on miles and had booked business class, which was more than pleasant as we had the little couchette-chair thingies, which reclined and made the trip very comfortable indeed.
I’m not very good at taking photographs when travelling but for some reason, I pulled the old iPhone out and began snapping shots in the cabin of the aircraft - documenting the experience, you know. They came out quite well and after choosing a few, I posted them on Facebook. A year ago. When we came back.
I had a number of comments on them, and blush to say, a few compliments as well (reddening here). Of course, time passed, the pictures had run their course of interest, the comments dwindled, and that was that - the trip was mere memory now.
Or was it?
Or was it?
The other day, I received notification that someone had commented on ‘a photo’. Curious soul that I am, I went to look and found one of the photographs taken on the plane, of me, with a new comment saying, “Divertiti!”. I was quite surprised, needless to say, the holiday at this point, being but a mere memory and all.
Seeing how the comment was in Italian, I responded likewise, indicating that the 'vacanza' had occurred last year, but thank you very much all the same.
Somehow, that little comment train would not stop coming, its little engine once dormant, but now sparked and stoked, began to spew forth against my strong protestations.
The next thing I know, the remarks are popping up one after another, all wishing me a “Bon Voyage” or some other such felicitations. I tried to correct the error, stem the tide, but like Mickey Mouse in The Sorcerer's Apprentice, the comments seemed to be dividing like those damned mops and doubling their forces! It was beginning to seem like the holiday that never ended, similar to Groundhog Day. I was doomed to keep repeating it! Just when you think you’ve fixed the ‘problem’, the whole thing starts again - or at least my denials of any such holiday happening at this moment in time.

If it hadn’t begun days ago, I would have thought it was an April Fool’s joke - but it’s April Fools and it's not a joke - it’s the holiday that never ends - even though the old year, scythe in hand, has left us far behind.
I’m sure this flurry of activity will end eventually - but until then, I feel a bit like I’m under water, trying to plead my case and no one can quite make out what I’m saying - too many bubbles.
Uh-oh! Got to go - I just received notification that someone has commented on a photo - keep your fingers crossed, wish me luck, and let’s hope it’s a different picture - and be ready - with a mop.
